I have been teaching Kindergarten at SSJ since 2002. I received my undergraduate degree and Early Childhood Certification from Widener University. I feel that Kindergarten is a wonderful time to watch a child grow socially and academically through learning and play.

Kindergarten Curriculum
Religion
In Religion the We Believe series “God Made the World” by Sadlier is used. The units focus on:- God Gives Us Many Gifts
- children learn that God made the world and all things good
- God is Our Creator
- children learn that God made them and gave us our families and friends to learn about and show love
- Jesus Shows Us God’s Love
- children learn about how much Mary loved God and that Jesus wants us to live as he did loving and caring for others
- Jesus Wants Us to Share God’s Love
- children learn how they are part of the family of God called the Church and the ways they can share God’s love
Math
In math the GoMath! series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is used. Throughout the Common Core Standards the units focus on:- Number and Operations
- representing, recognizing and writing numbers 0-20
- counting sequence and number names
- identifying groups of objects that are greater than, less than or equal to another group of objects
- understanding addition as putting together and adding to and subtraction as taking apart and taking from
- Geometry and Positions
- identifying and describing two and three-dimensional shapes
- Measurement and Data
- describing measurable attributes of objects such as length and weight
- classifying and counting objects in categories
ELA (English Language Arts)
In ELA, the Scott Foresman Reading Street series is used. The Common Core Standards are divided into four areas, reading, writing, speaking and listening and language. The focus is on:- phonemic awareness and phonics
- letters and their sounds
- blending sounds to produce words
- high-frequency words
- writing
- printing letters
- writing words and sentences
- text-based comprehension
- setting, characters, compare and contrast, classify and categorize and sequence
- oral and academic vocabulary
- introduction of 6 “amazing words” each week
- meaning of words such as noun, verb, adjective, proper noun
